Frequently Asked Questions

Are the marriages you witness, legal marriages?

Yes, since I am an ordained priest, counties throughout the U.S. recognize my actions.  I am recognized as a Catholic Priest in good standing with the International Council of Community Churches (ICCC).  Therefore, I am legal to witness marriages.

Will the Roman Catholic Church recognize our marriage?

No, but the Roman Catholic Church will recognize your marriage as civilly legal and valid (you are married).  The only way you can have a valid Roman Catholic marriage is to have your ceremony in the Roman Catholic Church fulfilling all their requirements.  Many of the marriages I witness are between couples where one or both parties have been married before in the Catholic Church and while divorced, they haven’t secured an annulment.

Will you perform ecumenical, interfaith, or non-denominational marriages?

Yes, I am open to any type of service which reflects your personal desires and traditions.  I have expanded my ministry to reach out to people of all faiths and beliefs.

Can we have a ceremony that includes clergy from different traditions?

Absolutely, I understand that it is important for both parties to enjoy ties to their faith on their wedding day.

Do you celebrate outdoor weddings?

Yes, I celebrate weddings outdoors.

Can we still get married even if one of us (or both of us) is divorced and we have not obtained an annulment?

Yes, many of the marriages I witness are between couples where one or both parties have been married before in the Catholic Church and while divorced, they haven’t secured an annulment.

Who is responsible for obtaining the marriage license?

The couple is responsible for obtaining the marriage license.  I need the marriage license before I can perform the ceremony.  I will complete the necessary information after the wedding and I will return the documents to the county clerk’s office.

Do you require premarital counseling?

No.  But, I will do premarital counseling if you would like.  Some couples think that premarital counseling is important to them as they prepare for their life long journey together in marriage.

How far will you travel to do a wedding ceremony?

I will travel hundreds of miles if I am available and my expenses taken care of.  My normal service area is Chicago and the Chicagoland area suburbs.  I have officiated weddings in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, South Carolina, Florida, Arizona, and Mexico.

How much is your stipend?

The stipend is intended to compensate for the time that I spend away from my family, and to defray from the expenses I incur in planning, preparing and celebrating a wedding ceremony.  The stipend varies according to the circumstances and requirements of the individual couple.  Of course if I need to travel there will be extra expenses involved.  You will find that my fee is reasonable considering the quality of ceremonies I perform.  ***Stipends are subject to change and are final when quoted to the bridal couple and recorded in a wedding officiant agreement.***

How far in advance should we confirm with you?

You should book your clergy as soon as you have decided on a date.  Your date is guaranteed only after I have received your deposit and it has cleared.  I am not booked as your minister until I have received your non-refundable deposit and it has cleared.***

It was such a pleasure having Fr. Long officiate our wedding. I am not from the Bloomington-Normal area and my fiancé and I did not know who we would have marry us. Our ceremony location was somewhat non-traditional in that it was held in a theater and not a church. We wanted someone who could make our ceremony experience unique and tailored to our needs because both of our families come from a wide range of religious beliefs. When we met with Fr. Long we knew immediately that he is who we wanted to marry us. He was kind and understanding to our wishes and provided us with the tools to create the ceremony we both wanted. Our ceremony was everything we could have asked for. It was absolutely perfect! As the wedding coordinator for the DoubleTree by Hilton, I highly recommend him to all of our couples who are in need of someone to officiate their wedding.

My husband and I knew that Rev. Jeff was the perfect officiant for our Wedding Day from the moment we met him.  His sincerely took an interest in our “love story,” relationship and ideal wedding.  Rev. Long consistently communicated with us while creating our personalized ceremony.  We had the option to make the ceremony as traditional or non-traditional as we wanted.  During all the intensity of preparing for our wedding, it was a welcome relief to discuss our ceremony.  It truly made my now husband and I reflect on what is truly important on our Wedding Day.  We had an intimate wedding and loved having Rev. Long with us during dinner.  Each one of our guests enjoyed his company and complimented the ceremony.  We truly hope Rev. Long will be a part of our next chapter together.  We highly recommend Rev. Jeff Long for your special day.
